Thursday, 14 May 2009Top five tips for Vivid Sydney

Vivid Sydney Executive Producer, Brenton Kewley, was recently interviewed by Time Out Sydney and gave his top five tips of what to experience during the festival. Brenton is also the producer of the City of Sydney’s New Years Eve celebrations so he certainly knows how to entertain the public!

  1. See the lighting installation ‘Cycle’. A part of the Smart Light Sydney Light Walk, ‘Cycle’ is located at west Circular Quay and allows people to jump on an exercise bike and power up the lighting installation. I’ll be down there every evening using it as a stress relief tool!
  2. Visit the ‘77 Million Paintings’ exhibition in The Studio at the Sydney Opera House. Random, original and constantly evolving, this exhibition is truly marvelous with the imagery appearing 77 million times throughout the festival. Some lucky staff member of mine is going down there to count them!
  3. Spend some time at Creative Sydney at the MCA. Their program is topical and entertaining and a who’s who of the creative industry will be there. It’ll also be a great opportunity for anyone wanting to become involved with this industry to mingle and chat to those who are. In this town, it’s who you know.
  4. Get out amongst it and make a day and a night of it. Take in the afternoon show of Laraaji’s Meditation and Laughter workshop at the Sydney Opera House, have an early dinner in the Rocks and go on the Smart Light Sydney Light Walk Guided Tour and end up in the Creative Sydney Salon Bar at the MCA. That’s where we’ll be!
  5. Definitely go and see Fire Water. A three-day festival recreating our past in a theatrical context. The performance includes the fiery demise of The Three Bees (this version is minus the cannon balls though!).

Thursday, 30 April 2009Creative Sydney Program details announced

Creative Sydney, the ‘ideas’ component of Vivid Sydney, announced the first details for its inaugural free event series taking place from
27 May - 12 June.

For three weeks, Creative Sydney will present an array of the city’s most interesting and inspiring talent, from the world-renowned to the underground, in a string of free talks and events at the Foundation Hall of the Museum of Contemporary Art and The Roxy in Parramatta.

Program highlights include Three Minute Sydney, where some of the city’s leading personalities will present their visions on what the city is to them and what it could be; Behind the Screens, a rare opportunity to gain insight into the inner-workings of local film production companies; Back My Project, where local emerging artists will pitch their creative ideas to a panel of experts “Dragon’s Den-style”.

Two performances not-to-be-missed include Remixing History, a live DJ/VJ performance mixing music, film, TV, news footage and advertising jingles; and for the finale, Songs of Sydney sees local musicians pay tribute to their town.

Luminous at Sydney Opera House, the music component of Vivid Sydney, has announced new acts to add to the line-up.

Tales from the Afterlives, a provocative performance-piece from neuroscientist David Eagleman and Seun Kuti - the son of world music icon Fela Kuti - will front his father’s band for a night of pulsing music, frenetic dance, and pure joy.

Also announced was SCENIUS, the must-see keynote address from Brian Eno. This is a great opportunity for Brian Eno fans to hear him speak about his work and vision.
